Indiana’s app industry has been growing steadily over the past decade and is projected to continue this trend into the future.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2007 when the iPhone was launched there were 5,300 software engineers working on app development in Indiana. Almost a decade later in 2015 that number has increased by more than 50 percent. Today there are 8,250 app developers working statewide, who earn an average annual salary of $86,670.
Going forward, in the decade leading up to 2022 the Indiana Department of Workforce Development projects that app developer jobs will continue to increase by 14 percent, adding 200 positions throughout the state each year.
The wireless communication industry trade group CTIA estimated in 2012 the Indiana’s app industry was generating $129 million. That report came the year before Indiana issued its own plan to increase spending and development on its own series of apps. A report issued by the government networking site GovLoop revealed that in 2013 the state’s government purchased a mobile device management server to pave the way for an entire wave of efficiency-increasing apps for state services and professionals.
